Fair Use Problem Survey

The IASPM-US Fair Use Project will collect and publish information about how music scholars, teachers, and artists utilize the fair use doctrine. We invite educators and artists to participate in our study, which will document complaints about restrictions on fair use. We want to know how people have attempted to quote a song lyric, musical notation, or sound recording in their scholarly books and articles, class materials, and/or artistic projects.

If you have tried to make fair use of a musical work and were prevented by a copyright owner (such as a song publisher or record company) or a gatekeeper (such as a journal or book publisher or your employer), please let us know using this quick and simple form.

Identity of Work You Tried to Quote
Type of Media You Tried to Use
Context of Use
Who Was Harmed

Please specify the person or people perceived to be harmed by the fair use impediment. Check all that apply.

Who Stopped You from Making a Fair Use?

If self, then please explain what you did, and why, in the text box below.
