WELCOME. Thanks for "attending" the online conference
of the United States branch of the International Association for
the Study of Popular Music (IASPM-US). We hope you'll read the papers
posted here and engage in dialogue with the author and others about
the one(s) you find most stimulating. World events caused the cancellation
of our conference last fall and this is the best alternative we
could devise. Huge thanks are owed to our Program Committee Chaired
by Steve Waksman and our local arrangements Chairs Venise Berry
and T.M. Scruggs. While we'll never see the full fruits of their
labors, the effort they made behind the scenes has enriched our
association. Thanks are also due to Jacqueline
Warwick and Glenn
Pillsbury and their supporters at UCLA for putting this virtual
gathering together for us. Finally, thanks to you for contributing
to its success.
It is my pleasure to announce two award winners, which w/should
have been done in September. The Graduate Student Paper award goes
to Kristin Solli of American Studies at the University of Iowa for
"Twangin' The Vernacular: Country Music And National Identity
In Norway." And, the IASPM book award for titles published
in calendar 2000 goes to Norman C. Stolzoff's Wake The Town And
Tell The People: Dancehall Culture In Jamaica published by Duke
University Press. Congratulations to both and thanks to the committees
who made those decisions.
2002 will mark the twentieth anniversary of IASPM-US. This year's
conference marking that milestone, will be held in Cleveland, Ohio
from October 10-13. The Call For Papers will be out in the next
few months. We hope to see you there. In the meantime, enjoy the
conference and be sure to renew your membership. Be well.
Paul D. Fischer
President, IASPM-US
